Top 20 List

By Chad Hayes

After three months of tests, blood work, treatment and countless prayers, the news is good. The surgery was successful and both patients are up and about and doing well. Prayers were answered and one of the nation’s top Southern Gospel groups would once again be boarding their bus, filling their concert dates.

What an exciting time to be a fan of Southern Gospel Music! With so many new groups hitting the airwaves, there is something for everyone. For those that are looking for a good sound and a group that isn’t a “cookie-cutter quartet”, look no farther than The Apostolic Boys.

Like many people, I was first introduced to Allison Durham Speer through a Gaither Homecoming video. I was impressed by her stunning range and dynamic stage presence. I imagined her to be larger than life and completely intimidating.

The year is 1969. John Lennon asks the world to “Give Peace a Chance” while the Vietnam war rages on. Neil Armstrong walks on the moon, the Woodstock Festival enters the history book and the Jackson 5 change the face of pop music. In the midst of this cultural upheaval, The Imperials begin their reign as gospel music’s “Male Group of the Year”.  In the five years since their start, this super group with a sound ahead of their time stayed at the top of the charts and in the fast lanes of gospel for many years.
