Over the
course of a year, I have the opportunity to review a good number of Southern
Gospel albums for SGM Radio. At the end of the year, I always like to look
back and figure out what I think are the best albums out of that year’s
reviews. This year, I decided to share my conclusions with all of you. So,
in no particular order, here are the Top 10 Southern Gospel Albums Of 2009-
as reviewed by SGM Radio. (That’s right- only albums I personally reviewed
for SGM Radio in 2009 are eligible to make this list.)
Life Stories
by The Stutzman Family
This album was a major step forward in this family’s sound. They display a
variety of vocal configurations, and their song selection and style will
appeal to a large number of listeners.
Everyday
by Triumphant Quartet
We already knew that Triumphant was a top-tier group. This album raises the
bar even higher with spot-on vocals and a variety of tempos and styles.
Worth It
by Brian Free & Assurance
Coming on the heels of their “Real Faith” album, this album takes the
group’s sound even further. There should be no doubt after hearing this
album that this is an elite group.
Declaration
by The Crist Family
Seven solid vocalists + good song selection + a variety of styles =
excellent album. Keep an eye on this group.
09
by The Booth Brothers
How did a “table project” make this list? By being VERY GOOD, that’s how.
This one really should have been a label release, in my opinion.
Hold On
by The Dove Brothers Quartet
This is one of the most consistent groups in Southern Gospel. No album
seems to ever be a “dud”. This album is a continuation of their “new
style”, and it’s another step in the right direction.
Akins
by The Akins
Their debut album was good, but their sophomore album was even better. This
family group does it all- besides singing, they write their own songs and
play their own instruments. Not only that, but they do all of these things
well. There’s a great future ahead for these guys.
No Trace Of
Rain
by Paid In Full
This is a group of young guys with a great progressive sound. There is not
a weak song on this entire album.
The Journey
by Liberty Quartet
Often, when a group has a personnel change, it takes an album or two for
their new sound to really “gel”. These guys managed it on their first album
with a new baritone vocalist. This album gives a fresh dimension to the
group’s trademark sound.
Something For
Everyone
by Voices Won
This trio of brothers is another group to keep your eye on. They have a
tight blend and a progressive edge that will appeal to many listeners.
Honorable Mention: For This Time (Tribute Quartet)
The Answer (Collingsworth Family)
The bottom line is this: if you haven’t had the chance to hear these albums,
then you are missing out on some great Southern Gospel music. They are a
must-have for any fan of Southern Gospel. Bring on the new albums of 2010!
