It’s that time of year again when people begin to take stock of where they are in life and what they would like to change. Lists are made of alterations that will help them move a little closer to a better version of themselves. Wikipedia, the popular Internet resource on just about everything, reports, “Recent research shows that while 52% of participants in a Resolution study were confident of success with their goals, only 12% actually achieved their goals”. Still, most of us tend to make that list every year. SGM Radio recently talked to a few artists about their goals for 2009.

Soloist Michael English was heartfelt and genuine about his resolution for the New Year. “My resolution is to loose 30 pounds and be a better husband, father, son and Christian. Not much different from everyone else's, huh? One more thing...to stay clean and sober.”

Songwriter Rebecca Peck says, “I haven't made New Year's resolutions for the last several years, because inevitably they end up falling by the wayside around January 15th. However, this year, I really want to focus on getting organized, so that I can spend more time with God, more time with my family, and more time writing songs. It's not that I'm totally disorganized, but I can do better. Oh, yeah, and I'd like to get off the last few pounds of baby weight too. She's seven months old now!”

Another favorite theme is basic self-improvement and Kingsmen member Bryan Hutson agrees. His goal is “to be a better dad and grow in my faith”. The apostle Peter would certainly concur, as he urged us to “make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love”. (2 Peter 1:5-7)

Maturing in faith is a popular Christian New Year’s resolution. Songwriter Phil Cross, mentioned that he intends to “ Spend most of 2009 doing things I cannot do; therefore, knowing and experiencing that God can.”

Donna Beauvais of Daywind is much more practical. Her resolution is “To get a smaller purse. All my friends make fun of my luggage!”

Resolutions are not just for the more mature sector of society. Popular Southern Gospel group, The Stutzman family, shared their resolutions with us as well. Seventeen-year-old Belinda Stutzman said, “In everything I do I want my actions to prove my faith and to point ‘that’s Him’”. Thirteen-year-old MaKayla states, “I am resolving to be a straight A student this year”. And nine-year-old Rebecca says, “I am working to have my weight be average”.

Heather “Mom” Stutzman’s resolution is one most echoed by mothers across the country. “My goal for 2009 is to create a healthier lifestyle for my family”. Her husband Ryan, tongue-in-cheek says, “I’m fine the way I am; what could I possibly want to change?” Then he adds, “Heather can think of plenty of changes to make!”

Many of us and our family members can list the changes that we should make in the new year to become healthier spiritually, mentally and physically. The experts warn that these changes should be reasonable for our current state. Small steps make the greatest changes and spiritual goal setting will yeild eternal results.

Thanks to all of our artists who shared their New Year’s goals with us. Happy 2009!
