| Gordon Mote’s story is one of a miracle. Born blind, Gordon surprised his family on Thanksgiving Day of his third year, by entertaining them at the piano. He simply crawled up on the piano bench and began playing. As he grew older, he became more and more involved in music. He visited many churches and other events playing and singing. Throughout his school years he played in the band and was band captain of his high school marching band. He attended Jacksonville State College for three years, transferring to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated cum laude with a degree in music. Following his college graduation, Gordon toured as keyboard player for Lee Greenwood. He has traveled with a number of other secular performers and has played on albums for dozens of artists, both in the secular and Christian field. The above facts are available through his record company and web site. While these facts tell us the experience and training this gentleman has enjoyed, they in no way tell the real story of Gordon Mote; his humility, his love for God and his family and his talent. Son: Gordon grew up in the Atalla-Gadsden, Alabama area. He is the son of Carolyn and Dennis Mote and has a brother who works in radio in Gadsden. Gordon was enthralled with music from a very early age and was fascinated by the piano and other musical instruments. His parents encouraged their son and prayed that God would allow Gordon to have the proper training to augment his natural talent. Their prayer was answered when Gordon attended Jacksonville State University and later graduated from Belmont University in Nashville. Husband: Gordon Mote met his wife, best friend and ministry partner while they attended Belmont. Kimberly and Gordon have been married thirteen years and on the Saturday morning of our interview, they were enjoying Kimberly’s pecan pancakes on the deck of their home with their two children, five year old Parker and eight year old Samantha. Father: Samantha and Parker Mote are Gordon and Kimberly Mote’s pride and joy. Samantha joins her father on his new solo project “There’s No Place That Love Can’t Reach,” singing “Kisses and Hugs.” Gordon shared, “I had to bribe her with a trip to Chili’s. That wasn’t so bad but her tastes have gone a little more expensive and she wants to go to Stoney River (restaurant) next time.” According to his father, Parker Mote is the sports fan in the family. “He loves baseball and was on the 5 and 6 year old All Star team. That was a thrill for me!” Worship leader: The Motes are active in their home church where Kimberly and Gordon are involved in the music. Gordon serves as Praise and Worship leader. Kimberly joins her husband on several songs on his new project. Studio Musician: For more than fifteen years Gordon Mote has traveled with various artists performing on stage with some of the biggest names in the music industry. He has established a career as one Nashville, Tennessee’s most sought-after studio musicians. He serves as session leader on a number of recordings having just completed work on the Gaither Vocal Band’s new project with new group member Wes Hampton. “Bill Gaither is a joy to work with,” Gordon said. “He is more excited about Gospel music than anyone I know. This has been his life’s goal, and you can’t help get excited about it when you work with him.” Gordon recently worked with legendary country artist Willie Nelson and has worked on projects with the Oak Ridge Boys, Bob Seiger, Kenny Chesney and others. He is much in demand in Nashville. “My new CD has allowed me to share my testimony with so many of my unchurched friends,” He stated. “It opened a door for me to share my experiences with Kid Rock and Bob Seiger and others. I’m just so blessed that God put me in position to do this.” And the new CD allows us to look at Gordon Mote, Soloist: In late July-early August, Gordon and RSI Music Group released the afore mentioned “There’s No Place That love Can’t Reach.” From that recording “I Catch ‘Em, God Cleans ‘Em” was shipped to Gospel radio. The song was released on the Family Music Group radio comp and is being played on Gospel stations as well as positive country stations across the nation. With the release of the new recording Gordon and Kimberly Mote have officially launched their music ministry. “Saying that sounds a little strange,” Gordon said. He then explained, “This all has to be ordained of God. I have toured with different artists and really didn’t want to travel again, but God opened the door, and we committed to walk through. If He opens a door for this to be full-time, then we’re willing to go there.” The Motes filled a number of dates during the summer months. “The kids loved traveling and we enjoyed being together as a family, serving the Lord. I prayed that God would give me a passion for this ministry and He has graciously done that.” As for great experiences in this Alabama native’s career, Gordon states that there have been many. “It was a thrill to play on Alan Jackson’s number one song, ‘Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning.’ That was my first time playing on a number one song. “And I remember playing for the first time on the Grand Ole Opry. That was a thrill. And I will never forget when I was playing with Lee Greenwood, we were at Fort Bragg performing for the troops. We did ‘God Bless The USA’ and the soldiers were singing louder than we were!” “God has been so good to me. Every day I get to play on a top ten album in country or Gospel music and I’m so grateful for all of this,” Gordon emphasized. “But my greatest thrill is to be able to share my music with people and to realize that someone’s life is touched through the witness in the music. I’m so humbled.” “Growing up I listened to the Imperials and I loved their music. That got me interested and I began listening to the lyrics,” He said. “I just pray that my music has that same impact on someone’s life.” I highly recommend the music of Gordon Mote and suggest you get a copy of “There’s No Place Love Can’t Reach.” The next song you’ll be hearing on radio from this new album is “Jesus Loves Me” and you’ll be touched by this one. My favorite song on the recording is “Carry Me Away” and I hope this song is also given radio exposure for fans to hear the message in the song. Theresa Smith of TS Promotions is doing the radio promotion for Gordon’s music, and Bob Rodgers of RSI Music Group does Gordon’s booking. | MEET THE TALENTED GORDON MOTE:
Son, Husband, Father, Worship Leader, Studio Musician, Soloist By Sandi Duncan-Clark |
| As a journalist in Southern Gospel music, I have had the privilege of reviewing hundreds of recordings, both by headliner artists and by new performers. It’s been a thrill to enjoy the great music and checking out the musicians and other credits on the recordings is a must. I’ve often noticed the name Gordon Mote as keyboard/pianist/organist and through that exposure I became familiar with this Tennessee gentleman’s extreme talent. Although I knew nothing about him, I learned respect for his talent. |
