The Whisnants are a North Carolina-based group that has been around for a while now.  Currently the group consists of Jeff Whisnant, Susan Whisnant, Aaron Hise, and Eric Ollis.  “Promises is their latest album.

Now, let’s take a look at each of the songs on the album.

The album starts out with a medium-tempo song called “What Can I Do For You?”  Susan is featured, and her vocals are nice and smooth.  The blend of vocalists is also solid here.  The tempo speeds up a bit for the second song, “He Bled, He Died, He Rose”.  It sometimes amazes me how much a group’s sound changes simply depending on who is singing the lead vocals, and this case is no exception.  The sound on this song has a different flavor, but it doesn’t lose any quality at all.  Next up is a medium-tempo ballad called “The Best That I Could Do”.  Aaron Hise is featured here, and aside from some of his tones sounding a bit “pinched”, his vocals are good.  Song #4 is the first true, slower ballad on the album.  Susan Whisnant beautifully sings “Voice Of Falling Tears”.

The fifth song is an up-tempo number called “The Light Of The Lamb”.  This is the first radio release from this album, and I think it will be a favorite of listeners.  This is followed by “Be Not Afraid”, a medium-tempo ballad featuring Aaron Hise.  Song #7 is another power ballad featuring Susan Whisnant.  “He Never Even Looked At The Man” is a song with a wonderful message that I’m sure will touch the hearts of listeners.  The eighth song is a Greater Vision tune called “There Is”.  I’ve never heard Greater Vision’s rendition of this song, but the Whisnants’ version is solid.  I can even hear some echoes of Greater Vision’s sound throughout the song.

“He Is Guiding Me” is an up-tempo song with some nice strings in the arrangement.  Then, Jeff Whisnant is featured on a slow, smooth song called “The Past Is A Promise”.  He effectively delivers the strong message found in this song.  Song #11 is a medium-to-up-tempo offering called “I Must Touch Jesus”.  Finally, the album ends with an old Southern Gospel favorite, the up-tempo “I’ll Live In Glory”.  There are actually two classic Southern Gospel songs by this name.  I’m not sure who did this particular one, but it’s not the version done by the Kingsmen/Carolina Boys on their “Good News” album.  Either way, it’s a good closing to the album.

Fans of the Whisnants’ sound will be glad to find that nothing has changed with this album.  It’s a solid album full of exactly what you would expect from the Whisnants.  It’s definitely an album that Southern Gospel fans will enjoy.  Overall, I would give this album a 7 ½ out of 10 microphones!

Favorites: “What Can I Do For You?”, “He Bled, He Died, He Rose”, “Voice Of Falling Tears”, and “I’ll Live In Glory”
